Evolution of a Mixed Media Painting

This piece isn't finished--there's another evolution of it drying on the table in the back room right now right now--but I wanted to show you where I've come from on this piece. It's interesting for me to look at, especially knowing that it could still change substantially...

Completely Not Finished

I don't know if I've ever even used purple in a painting before!

One of the things I'm doing differently (no idea if it's affecting the final piece) is I'm actually doing a underpainting in black/white/grey. It does seem to affect the color, when I put it on, in a very subtle way.

Also trying to blend less totally, leave some brushy/smudgy stuff.

Mixed Up Media All Over the Place...

I've actually been painting quite a lot, in little short bursts while I can sneak outside to the studio--well, okay, I'll be honest with you. When I get grumpy (which I'd like to say NEVER happens, but...it does) my kids actually ASK me to go out to the studio...So I'm actually not sneaking, I'm being sent, kinda like when you were little and your mom sent you to your room...

"Mom, that is ENOUGH, now! That's it--You go right to the studio, right now, young lady!"

Or something like that...

The whatever it was that I was struggling with seems to have abated, and I can see some new direction in the pieces I've been working on. This first one was painted entirely with my fingers, and I loved loved loved doing it!

I will post more as I scan them.

All Alone?

Jenny's at a friend's house spending the night, Katie's on her beach trip with her friend, and Joel's in Ventura at a baseball tournament. Which means that Richard and I are home alone...

This has not happened for over sixteen years.

Coming Out of an Artistic Slump?

Artists' block, lately, I think. Just struggling to make anything (notice the focus on product rather than process?--that's always a red flag, for me).

The Collage Every Day got me out of one rut and into another--once I was done creating THE COLLAGE, every day, then I was finished.

Very tired, lately--Missed taking my medication for a few nights, and that always causes problems.

I'd sit out here in the studio and look at other people's artwork and feel as though my work could never be that good...

Six sentences into this post, and it's obvious that I was suffering from some kind of creative block. Focusing on product, comparing myself to others, and feeling that I was done being creative for the day...

I've had ideas for new paintings swirling around in my head for a month, now, but felt so intimidated at the thought of putting paint on canvas. Well, today I worked my way through it, and started four new pieces, worked on two older pieces, and just generally had fun in the studio. I even did some finger painting--talk about freeing myself from expectations!

Pictures to come soon, I promise. Things have been so busy around here--Joel's had football and/or baseball two or three times a day--baseball games on Saturdays and Sundays--he's gone to Ventura this weekend for a baseball tourney. Katie leaves for a week camping at the beach on Sunday. Jenny spent the night at a friend's house, and then had the friend over here for the night. I've been frustrated with my house, which seems to spawn collections of dirty laundry and used dishes on every horizontal surface in every room--how does that happen, anyhow?

Katie began the process for her braces yesterday, and her poor mouth is swollen and she's hurting--

Just too much going on, but amidst all this chaos, art is starting to happen again, I promise!

P.S. Richard bought two bags of sweet corn from the stand down in town that always has such amazing corn, so we're grilling hamburgers and having corn on the cob and salad for dinner tonight! Yum.

Image Selection and Placement

When creating a collage, where you place something is as important as what you're placing.

As an example, I'm going to share my morning's conundrum regarding placement of the words on today's collage for the day. In this first image, below, I've placed the words 'I thought you'd gone'. I have one more word cut out: 'away'. But I stopped here and thought, hmmm. Do I want this word or not? Then the question became 'and if I do want it, where should it go?'

For me, these three choices are significantly different from each other. Can you see the difference? Rather than an aesthetic difference, to me it seems a difference of tone, as well as message.

I still haven't decided where the word will go, by the way! Today, we're off to watch Joel's team play in a baseball tournament about 45 minutes away--one game today, two games tomorrow, and one game Sunday. Not too hot out, so I'm really looking forward to it.

A P.S.--After getting the chance to look at these three all together up on the blog, I realize there's a fourth choice: to place the word 'away' at the bottom, but lined up with the other words. That may be the best choice. (Just goes to show you how valuable a scanner and editing program can be--you can create virtual images of possibilities, compare them, and then choose! Ah, the joy of technology.) I was going to say I'll take some pix of Joel at baseball, but I'm not allowed to photograph him while he's playing, his rule. He says it bothers him. So no more technology for me, today! Have a great day.

Collage No. 29

I'm feeling kind of stumped today. Tired, not terrible inspired, a little lost. It's almost like I'm getting ready to start something new, but I can't imagine what...

Collage No. 28 and IF: Craving

He knew what he wanted, and he was off to find it.

Collage No. 27

Mixed media collage, 4" x 6" on 190 lb. watercolor paper

I'm going to have to make some type of schedule for myself--I need to treat coming out to the studio more like a job, otherwise I won't get anything done. Summer is contagious, and if I hang out with the kids too much, I'll catch it...

Actually Joel's hardly been here--school ended Friday, Saturday he played five games in a football passing tourney, Sunday he played a baseball doubleheader, and he's had both football and baseball practice every day. (Tonight at 6 p.m. he goes for his third practice of the day!)

Jenny's just cruising, enjoying herself, but Katie wants something to do--"What are the symptoms of cabin fever, Mom? Because I think I've got it!"

Some tutorials coming up--one on Photoshop, and one on Image Transfers--stay tuned!

Observations on Making Art and Collage No. 26

Something I've noticed since I began making one collage every day is that I've gotten caught up in the collage-making and haven't done any actual painting. Of course, this has been complicated by the fact that I've been laying laminate flooring, but now that everything's (pretty much) reorganized, I'm starting to paint again.

The good thing is that 'one collage every day' has helped me let go of the need for immediate perfection in every piece I create. I think it's vital that art-making remain a joyful activity, at least for me.

Mixed Media Collage--Using Original Photos

I finished this piece about 5 weeks ago and apparently never posted it. I've used collage and archival copies of original photos--that's our pasture and our old pony. I love the odd color combinations on this, and I loved continuing the tree using pen and ink. I tried to do something like this a couple of years ago, and was very dissatisfied with the result. I may have the knack of it now.

There is just something about old book pages. I could do a whole series of these, from small to large (in fact I may).

I'm going to catch up today--got behind on the scanning and posting while the computer was unplugged...

Art In The Studio With Jenny

One of the things I had to struggle with when I started making art was the issue of SHARING.

I started amassing a collection of rubber stamps and pretty papers and canvases and paint and ink, and I didn't want it to get ruined. Maybe I'm just selfish (probably), or maybe it just sprang from not having many art supplies when I was little, but I had to make a not-very-easy but conscious decision that my kids could use my stuff.

I thought about it, and realized 'it's just stuff, and my kids are more important.' Now don't get me wrong, there are some rules, but for the most part, my stuff is their stuff, as long as they respect it and clean up after themselves.

Here are the pieces Jenny made last night while we were down here in the studio. I was sorting through some of the piles in the back room, and she was just a busy beaver. I love the 'mixed up' creature (click on it to take a closer look), and of course I adore the big blue heart/card/message.

What I've Been Doing: Laminate Flooring in the Studio

Inspired by my success in laying laminate flooring in Katie's room, I decided to put laminate flooring down in the studio, as well. I've had the boxes of flooring stacked in the garage for almost two years now, always see-sawing back and forth about whether I should try to lay it myself or hire Walt, the wood wizard who built my studio.

I finished yesterday, and am so impressed with it. I'm happy happy happy that I didn't ruin it, although I still have lots of organizing to do. The original plan called for hiring Joel and his buddy to help me move everything out of the studio, but that just seemed like an impossible task, so I shifted things around a half-room at a time. Not the ideal situation, but given the weird weather we've had here in the last week, it was a good decision.

I will say that I miss my old red painted floor--loved the jolt of color it gave!--but I just couldn't keep it clean/get it clean. The laminate will be easy to care for.

OCED Day No. 18

I won't tell till tomorrow--then I'll post a picture!

OCED Day No. 17

Did my collage, but got distracted and didn't post because I couldn't get to the computer--can you guess what I did?
