You Poor Little Scrumplet

'Little Scrumplet' is my new name for Jenny, taken from the book she was reading to me today.

Didn't come into the studio yesterday at all, but came out here today with Jenny--she read The BFG by Roald Dahl, out loud to me, while I worked. What a pleasant way to spend an afternoon!

It's a wonderful book, by the way, about a little orphan girl, Sophie, and the Big Friendly Giant that she meets. Just like all of Dahl's other books (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, etc.) it's a bit dark, but oh! what wonderful language he uses!

'The human bean,' the Giant went on, 'is coming in dillions of different flavours. For instance, human beans from Wales is tasting very whooshey of fish. There is something very fishy about Wales.'

'You means whales,' Sophie said. 'Wales is something quite different.'

'Wales is whales,' the Giant said. 'Don't gobblefunk around with words...'

The BFG--highly recommended!

Nice reminder to look up Dahl. Great collages - love the French behind the boy...

Big Friendly Giant sounds delightful! Thank you for another title to add to my list.

I so love Roald Dahl! And I like it that he's not afraid to put the darkside into juvenile lit. I love your illustration for this too!
