So here's my dilemma:
I love the look of a richly layered collage, the feeling that I can look and look and look and always physically see something new...
but I also love looking at a collage with just a few key elements juxtaposed to each other in that way that grabs you and holds you...
in both types, there is much to think about; a certain kind of mystery and power; and while I talk the good talk about following my instincts and just getting out of the way, I can't put this conflict out of my mind. What I need to say to myself is that it's an issue that will resolve itself as my style changes and grows and develops. But what exactly is my style?
Ah, there's the rub.

Just try different things until it seems right
I was intrigued by your “Question of the Day” dilemma (Monday, September 04, 2006). It’s obvious that you enjoy the process of making the art as much as viewing the finished piece. I wonder why you feel you need to make a choice?
It seems to me that as an artist you aren’t bound by one certain technique, size or medium, but can enjoy the freedom of expressing your creativity in any method you choose.
So, one day you can work on a quilt, the next, scrawl a poem across the floor with drippy purple paint. Or, more specifically, one day you can do a richly layered and textured piece that invites intensive study and then an elegantly simple and direct piece. Either way, the art will always offer new insights each time you look at it.
Quit worrying about your “style” - it will continue to change and develop. You’ll be surprised where it takes you.
Put on some talc and stop that rubbing!
